Displaying LZW-compressed tiff files in visualiser
A question I've been asked a couple of times recently is can you display lzw-compressed tiff files in the gxy visualiser? The short answer is no, well not directly, anyway (I understand MapObjects, the tool behind the visualiser, does not support this format).

However, one can export these files as uncompressed tiff files from certain packages (PaintShopPro for one has an Uncompressed option in the Save As ... Options dialogue) - I'd imagine most similar viewers worth their salt would do too.

Just thought I'd share some other recommendations for converting these which I've collected since. I take no responsibility for the veracity of these, but no reason to doubt the either; I've just cut and pasted what other people have told me.

"Give image tuner a try, it's available on cnet. It'll also do batch runs and output to a new file size. "

"Irfanview - free application that allows us to quickly change the TIFF file compression type"

"I use Photoshop / Photoshop Elements for uncompressing LZW"

"FWtools also does that; with projection conversion, batch mode, etc

"ImageMagick: a command-line utility, useful for all kinds of conversions and batch processing operations. Fairly advanced and 'techie', not the easiest tool to use."

"I can recommend GlobalMapper. It is not freeware and I am not sure of the cost but it excels in this type of conversion task. http://www.globalmapper.com/";
