Bed Undulation Problems
Has anyone got the modelling experience of very undulating bed with big differences in elevations of around 10m up and down between the cross sections. This pertains to a estuary model where there are localised deep sections along the lenth of the river. Even the interpolated sections are also not helping to run the steady state model!. Any ideas on how to deal with the very undulating geometry between the cross sections.

You should try inserting narrow slots (pilot channels)with a base level at a constant grade between the undulations, or section of undulating bed.

The slots do not need to be more than 2cm wide and will therefore have a negligible impact on the river hydraulics.

hope this helps

I'm not sure that I would leap to the narrow slot option as my first try.

I would make sure that the differences between sections were realistic and consistent with the steady flow (and downstream boundary) that you wish to solve for. In some estuaries there never would be a steady flow throughout the whole reach so you have to be sure that the model you are proposing is physically realistic. For such big variations in bed level you probably need a large minimum water level at the downstream boundary and probably also a large inflow at the upstream boundary. Ideally the upstream boundary would be located upstream of the tidal limit.
